How to choose the right lighting for a children's room

Children´s room lighting

Answer:

When purchasing children's lighting, look primarily for functionality, safety, and also a nice design.

The search for the right children's lighting should certainly not be underestimated. Children spend a lot of time in their rooms and activities like drawing or studying require sufficient illumination. But make sure that very young kids avoid looking directly into the light. Safety is an important aspect of children's lighting. Every parent is well aware of how curious and inquisitive can children get.

Chandeliers of all shapes and colours

To choose children's lighting, make sure to keep in mind the room size, the number and placement of windows, the colour of walls, furniture, and carpet. A children's room is much more than just a bedroom as it serves the purpose of a playroom and, eventually, it becomes a study. Therefore, one light is not nearly enough. The main thing is to choose a central light. Attached ceiling lights are suitable for lower ceilings while chandeliers  are a great option for higher ceilings. Whatever the type, you can choose from a wide range of shapes and sizes. We offer anything from simple ceiling lights with pictures, football-shaped spotlights, all the way to a chandelier that looks like an aeroplane. Always look for options with diffused light.

Purchasing children's lighting also involves buying light sources to put in the lights. Remember that children rooms are often full of colours which can change under different types of bulbs. Classic light bulbs accentuate warm colours, while cold colours get highlighted by fluorescent lights. Classic and  halogen light bulbs cause the least distortion but they consume a lot of energy. LED bulbs have been recently gaining popularity for they are a great energy-saving option that can provide various colours of light.

Children's lamp must be flexible

The bed area benefits from a wall light. Choose a light bulb with the right intensity based on  your child's age. A small kid only needs a soft light for falling asleep and you can also use it for changing diapers. A brighter light is a good option for older kids when they want to read a book before bed. It's also a good idea to put an orientation light near the bed. It contains a motion detector which turns the light on automatically and it switches back off after a short while. Additionally, the light is portable and fits perfectly into a small child's hand. Some orientation lights can also provide a soft light that lasts the whole night to keep away children's fear of darkness.

When furnishing a room for a schoolchild, pay close attention to desk light. The recommended light intensity for reading is 500 lx. The best options are desk lamps which can be moved along the table's surface, adjusted in their direction and light intensity. Ideally, a lamp should have a flexible arm to enable the child to change the light angle as needed. To avoid casting a shadow on the working area, position the lamp on the left side of the desk for right-handers and on the right side for left-handed children. The lamp should cast a light from 30 cm above (based on the child's height) and at a 60 –70 degree angle. To avoid dazzling, the lamp should contain a  non-translucent shade and the bulb should not stick out. Don't forget to put the lamp on a flat and stable surface to avoid falls. It's beneficial to have another source of light in the room along with the lamp when working at a desk. That prevents sharp lighting transitions when looking away from the desk into the room which makes the eyes tired. We do not recommend putting floor lamps or other lights with long cables into your children's bedroom.
