How to choose proper lighting for the cellar

Garage and cellar

Answer:

A cellar usually doesn't have access to natural sunlight. So let's find out how to make sure your cellar is properly lit using our luminaires.

If you actively use your cellar, you surely know how important it is to have proper lighting in the room. As we've already mentioned, a great majority of cellars don’t get enough sunlight, which only means one thing – you need to fill the room with lights. However, that might be harder than it looks at first sight.

Different types of cellars
The first step is to determine which type of cellar you want to illuminate. If your cellar's main purpose is that of storage for keeping your winter tires and old furniture, one main ceiling light will do. Such a light should sufficiently illuminate the entire room. It's also important to realise that your cellar is neither an exhibition room, nor a showroom. That means we should pay more attention to the quality of lighting rather than its design. Cellars tend to have low ceilings and be smaller in size, so the best choice is an attached ceiling light, which won’t get in the way and will provide enough light.

The most suitable solution for a wine cellar is a combination of ceiling lights and wall lights which will perfectly illuminate the entire arched ceiling. If you want something more aesthetic, opt for some recessed lights instead of wall lights. As people like to spend a bit of time tasting wine in their wine cellar, it's important to feel comfortable in this space. To ensure a good atmosphere, we recommend lights with colour temperature up to 5,000 K.

One of the most common issues in cellars is humidity. Of course, in some cases humidity is welcome, but in most cases, it's really difficult to deal with it. To fix the problem, you need to have proper light. The best thing you can do is to search for a light with a sufficient IP rating. For example, heavy-duty and industrial lights, outdoor lighting, or floodlights provide great protection against humidity. These luminaires not only illuminate the cellar as the primary light sources, but you can also use them as a secondary light source in your DIY corner.
